Petition to the House of Commons and the National Assembly
of Quebec
We :
- Given that the Conservative government announced that it does not intend to meet the targets of the Kyoto Protocol that Canada officially committed to in December 2002;
- Given that the National Assembly of Quebec unanimously passed a motion recently calling on the federal government to meet its international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto Protocol and to transfer the funds needed to Quebec for its implementation;
- Given that the vast majority of Quebeckers support reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 6% below 1990 levels between 2008 and 2012, even if this requires considerable effort from individuals, businesses and governments;
We want the House of Commons, the National Assembly of Quebec and the signatories to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to know that we condemn the decision of Stephen Harper's Conservative government to abandon the Kyoto targets;
And we call on the federal government to reconsider its decision and meet its greenhouse gas reduction commitments under the Kyoto Protocol.
